Injection Cube: A Clear Way to Teach FlexPen Use

Clients expect Promotion Unlimited's educational premiums to make their own products look even better. But our learning tools more than just enhance -- they sometimes prove the worth of an entire product line.

During a routine visit to a Florida hospital that dispenses the FlexPen needle to diabetics who self-inject, Novo Nordisk's Rob Sangiamo learned this firsthand. Sangiamo, the company's associate director of institutional marketing, was traveling with a diabetes care sales rep to follow up on the FlexPen's performance. On that day, the pair was greeted with disturbing news: the nurse wanted to drop the needle line from the hospital's formulary, claiming it did not properly dispense insulin to patients.

Sangiamo immediately knew this information was false and realized the traditional way of teaching patients how to self-inject -- using fruit such as oranges and plums -- was resulting in an erroneous perception of the FlexPen's effectiveness. But how to convince the nurse?

Enter the Education Injection Cube, Promotion Unlimited's self-injection demonstration tool. A clear, pyramid-shaped container topped by a skin-like membrane, the cube allows patients to actually see the needle's penetration, offering greater understanding of how deeply they need to penetrate their own skin to effectively self-inject. First designed for a multiple sclerosis product in 1999 and redesigned for Novo Nordisk in 2008, the injection cube has received rave reviews, spurring orders for more than 350,000 to date.

Sangiamo and the sales rep quickly demonstrated to the Florida nurse how to use the FlexPen with the injection cube, clearly proving just how effectively the needle works.

"The nurse was blown away and thrilled with the injection cube to be able to properly demonstrate to her staff and their patients on how to give a proper injection," says Joan Charbonneau, CEO of Promotions Unlimited. Afterwards, she told Sangiamo, "You just saved your product."
