Promotions Unlimited Donates Breast Health Cards to Support African Health Initiative Outreach

Whether at the most advanced medical clinics in America or in an impoverished developing nation a continent away, Promotions Unlimited is making a difference.
As part of its mission to use its in-depth understanding of the
health care industry to provide products that educate patients and
medical professionals, Promotions Unlimited has made donations of its
Breast Health Card to charities that work to further this goal.
One such recipient is the Bethesda Hospital in the Republic of
Cameroon. In this African nation, particularly in communities outside
of major cities, health care facilities are often unsanitary and poorly
equipped. Most of the country’s population has limited access to
medical care, and no medical insurance.
In a country where women cannot afford medical procedures, let alone
regular mammograms, preventative and proactive health care are
all-the-more vital to saving women’s lives and keeping families in
tact.
To this end, Promotions Unlimited supplied its Breast Health
Cards to support an outreach project providing medical, dental, and eye
care to villages in Cameroon.
The cards were used to educate local women about proper
self-examination, a seemingly simple, but important practice. This
previously unheard-of health care measure was a key step in empowering
women of the villages to take individual action to protect their own
health – a potentially life-saving technique that once learned, is free
of medical cost or outside intervention.
The Breast Health Card proved to be a significant tool, giving doctors
and nurses a realistic and culturally acceptable means of teaching
villagers how to properly conduct self-examinations.
“The women of Cameroon amazed me...they were SO open to the idea of
doing self breast exams. It made them feel very significant,” said
Rosemary Jackson, a participant in the Cameroon outreach program who
initially requested donations of the Breast Health Cards.
The realistic representations of breast lumps and the accurate
texture and feel of the breast model on the Breast Health Cards made it
possible to more easily educate women and bridge both cultural and
language divides.
“Because of the breast card samples that
[Promotions Unlimited] sent and the classes that I taught while we were
there in Yaoundé, Africa at the Bethesda Hospital, they have made a
special room for breast exams and questions about breast cancer,” added
Ms. Jackson. “We gave knowledge, and it was welcomed!”
Can one product, one great idea, truly make a difference in
saving lives? Ms. Jackson’s experiences have led her to believe so.
After leaving the Breast Health Cards at the hospital in Yaoundé and at
a clinic in Bemenda, she relayed to Promotions Unlimited an experience
of her own: “The next day one of the Pastor’s wives came to see a
doctor because she had found a lump...she was so gracious and thankful
for the education,” said Ms. Jackson. “No matter what color, what
language, or where we live in the world...we are all women and we
should do what we can to help each other! Thank you for helping me
help them.”
